DISTRICT NURSING

HASTINGS ASSOCIATION. ANNUAL MEETING HELD. The annual meeting of the Hastings District Nursing Association was held on Monday afternoon, the Mayor, Mr. G. F. Roach, presiding. The annual report read as follows: “During the year, the work of the association has been directed more in support of the work of the district nurse, and co-operating with the Hastings committee of the Hospital Board, in giving assistahce where necessary. “The suggestion that the association should relinquish the distribution of relief was strongly supported by Dr. Biggs, medical superintendent of the hospital, but, as no other organisation was operating, the association continued to function in that capacity until April, when a branch of the Red Cross Society was formed, with the support of the Botary Club, which undertook the setting up of an office, and organising a clothes drive. In this direction, this committee donated £6 towards the cost of seting up the Red Cross office, and purchased goods and materials to the value of £5O. “In eevry way possible the district Nursing Association has ably assisted the work of the Red Cross. Mrs. F. Glenny was appointed supervisor at the depot, and gave herculean service in this connection. “The committee desire to express their appreciation of the services rendered by Nurse Cooper, who has carried out her duties with great ability; her quiet, effective work has been much appreciated by the members and patients. FRIENDSHIP SERVICE. “The committee realised that the severance of the relief work would mean that many homes would not be reached through friendship, in the same degree as opportunity had offered previously, and it was decided to hold social afternoons. “The committee desires to thank the Rev. D. J. A. Shaw for the use of St. Andrew’s Hall for the social afternoon, the Methodist Young Men’s Class for the use of their hall for committee meetings, to the Pakowhai Women’s Institute for gifts of dainties for distribution among patients; also gifts of old linen; Havelock North Women’s Institute for gifts of eggs. “Thanks are due to the Napier branch of the Red Cross Society for supplies of clothing for necessitous cases, which were delivered by the secretary, Mr. Tait, prior to opening the local branch of the society. “To the Press for its continued help, and all who have assisted in any way.” SPLENDID WORK DONE. In moving the adoption of the annual report, Mr. Roach congratulated the association on its splendid work during the past 12 months. Although the activities had been reduced during the year, the association still found plenty to do with visiting the sick and the Red Cross movement, and the work was of inestimable value which was highly appreciated by the sick and needy of Hastings. The Mayor also congratulated Nurse Cooper on her work “The organisation must go on, even If it is only to assist the sick and needy, and I hope it will always be continued,” concluded the Mayor. As a member of the Hospital Board, Mr. S. J. McKee said that Nurse Cooper’s work had been greatly appreciated and particularly pleasing to the board was the fact that she had done so well with her . financial side of the work. The balance sheet of the association showed a credit balance of £7O 1/9 at June 80 last.
