“ABUSED ALL PRIVILEGES”
TWO GIRLS IN COURT. SEQUEL TO CROSS-COUNTRY TOUR. “Everything humanly possible has been done for these girls, but they have abused all the privileges extended to them,” stated Senior-Sergeant D. J. O’Neill at the Hastings Police Court this morning when two girls, aged 18 years and 17 years respectively, appeared before Mr H. W. O. Baird, J.P. The younger girl was charged that, on October 27 last, being an inmate of the Greenmeadows Receiving Home, she did escape from custody, and the older girl was charged with being deemed an idle and disorderly person in that she had insufficient visible lawful means of support. When asking for a remand until Monday, the police officer said that the best course to adopt was to keep the girls in custody. “It is for their own benefit,” he said. “They have been wandering all round the country since they left their homes at Auckland on October 7 last. They stopped a night on the Waikarei range before visiting Hamilton and Cambridge, and then came across country to Napier, and were eventually located in Hastings some days ago at 4 o’clock in the morning. Though not under arrest they were taken to the Police Station, and from there they escaped over a back fence. They were found later, and one was sent to the Receiving Home, and the other was found a position at Mangatahi. Both left these places, and the police made a lengthy search, finding them near Maraekakaho this morning. They had been out all night. We have wired the mother of one of the girls, the one charged with vagrancy, for money to send her home.’’ The Bench: 1 suppose they will lie allowed a fair amount of latitude if remanded. It seems a little hard to keep them in custody. Senior-Sergeant O’Neill: They have to be watched very carefully. They make a habit of escaping, but they will not be confined all the time to the cells. The Bench: That will be all right, Ulen. The remand is granted.
