“GREED PERONIFIED.”

(To the Editor.) Sir, —May 1 be allowed space in your paper to reply to “Live and Let Live’s” criticism of the Unemployed Association’s efforts. Whoever he is, he evidently does not realise the enormous help the small issue of rations is to the women and children of the Havelock unemployed. I happen to know for a fact that the date was fixed for this concert which he disapproves long before Mr Starkey’s announcement. I am not condemning Mr Starkey, nor his generosity, nor the cause for which he is organising the concert. I do say, though, that it is evident, on the face of it, that “Live and Let Li.ve” has never experienced the pinch of poverty. I should imagine that he is one of those people who, as long as they have books to satisfy their craving for intellectual employment, do not care a continental! about how many women or children there are who have less material packing for their little tummies. It is no fault of the unemployed that they cannot afford to buy more necessities —much less books —and I think that “Live and Let Live” would do better to use a little personal sacrifice and spend his money in an excellent evening’s entertainment, and thereby help the needy, than by pandering to his own selfish desires by subscribing to a library. He only gets the benefit of the book, while many are helped by the food issued by the hard-working few who give up their time and labour free,' gratis and for nothing that others may be the better off. —Yours etc., ONE WHO HAS BEEN THERE. Havelock North, 26/10/32.
