MOTOR IMPORTS
SUBSTANTIAL DECLINE COMMERCIAL VEHICLE MARKET. PREFERENCE FOR BRITAIN. A report prepared by the Comptroller of Customs for the first nine months period of this year shows that there has been a decrease of 781 m the number of motor vehicles imported into New Zealand compared with the same period of last year. For the nine months’ period of this year 2328 vehicles were imported, compared with 3109 for the same period of last year. The values were £337,774, compared with £-156,156. The greatest decrease was shown in connection with Canadian vehicles, only 87 being brought into the Dominion compared with 632 last year and 7114 in 1930. The numbers imported from the United States fell from 549 to 196. The imports from the United Kingdom showed an increase of 131, the total being 2173. The following table shows the number of vehicles of all types imported in the first nine months of the last three years:— 1930. 1931. 1932.

In connection with passenger vehicles, complete ears and chassis, there is a predominance of United Kingdom imports. A total of 1673 were imported, valued at £240,486. Vehicles imported from the United States numbered 136. Following are the number of cars and chassis imported in the first nine months of each year:—

The commercial vehicle market was almost entirely monopolised by the United Kingdom, which supplied 369 out of 431 units imported. There were 16 imported from the United States and two from Canada.
