STOCK PRICES

STOBTFOBD LODGE SALE A LOWER RANGE IN VALUES. The number of beef and store cattle yarded at Stprtford Lodge sale yesterday was much beyond the capacity of the yards. The yards are planned out for the selling of cattle through the ring, and if offered from the rails buyers are not able to secure a proper view of the stock. If the present entries continue, some alteration should be seriously considered by the brokers. Prices for fat bullocks eased about 10/- per head from last week’s sale. In the fat Cow and heifer section, the offering was beyond requirements, making it necessary for some lines to be withdrawn from sale; otherwise there would have been a collapse in values.

Both cow and heifer beef were easier by 10/- -to 20/- per head. In the store cattle section there was a very heavy yarding, the number offered being difficult to arrive at, as the yards were refilled after the beef pens were cleared. The line of P.A. cattle offered on account of Tikitapu Station, Wairarapa, sold at rates which must have been disappointing to the vendor, a line of 2-yr. P.A. steers from this draft selling in two cuts at £2 12/- and £2 8/- respectively. Two-year P.A. heifers from the same draft made £2 3/-, and a 3-yr.. line £3 7/-. A forward line of 4-yr. P.A. bullocks, sold on account of Mr. J. Williams,* Waimarama, were purchased by a local grazier at £4. Several drafts of 2-yr. Hereford and P.A. steers from Wairoa district realised from £1 19/6 to £2 5/-. Station cows and heifers, which have been selling at recent sales at values in advance of their parity with beef, were sold at yesterday’s sale at a much lower range of values. ■ln the dairy section yearling Jersey heifers again met with a keen demand, a pen of extra choice realising £4 7/6. In the fat- sheep section, shorn fat ewes were on a par with last week, selling round about 5/-. Heavy weight shorn wethers were sold from 8/7 to 10/6.

Evidently vendors of fat lambs have not much faith in the export market, being prepared yesterday to accept a much lower rang? of values. There was a much larger yarding of sheep in the store pens, owing to a number of farmers closing largo area’ up for grass-seed. Prices were much easier, although when values are compared with those ruling in the fat section, there is still no. margin for the grazier. A draft of forward shorn wethers, sold on account of Mr. lan Hamilton, Sherenden, realised 8/7. Woolly wether hoggets made from 9/6 to 10/2.
