TARADALE
TOWN BOARD MEETING FIRST ASSEMBLY OF NEW BODY. BUSINESS DEALT WITH.' The first meeting of the newly-elected Taradale Town Board was held last night. Present: Messrs J. Williamson (chairman), C. H. Williams, W. H. C. Howard, A. V. Danvers, J. Wainscott, J. Gilmour,, and E. O. Anderson. The Hawke’s Bay Country Council advised that for the ensuing year it would be prepared to carry out the sanitary inspection work in the Taradale town district for the sum of £l4.—The offer was accepted. The Taradale Cricket Club wrote asking for playing lights Oh the park.— The request was agreed to, subject to certain conditions being imposed by the board. A letter of thanks was received from the Greendale Basketball Club for placing the park in good order for the holding of the recent tournament. The Taradale Tennis Club wrote thanking the board for surfacing tho court in the park. A request for a rebate of hire for tho Town Hall for a benefit entertainment was not entertained. CLERK’S REPORT. Tho clerk and overseer, Mr W. G Jarvis, reported that all roads were in good order, but owing to the recent rapid growth all drains would require attention as soon as possible. Further’ levelling work had been done at the motor camp, while 800. trees had been planted in the area and fenced for protection, and the car track down to the bathing pool had been improved. The three tennis courts on the park had been resurfaced. The proposed cycle track had been pegged off, and now was ready for laying out by members of the Returned Soldiers’ Association. In connection with the Antecedent Liability Loan of £1074, which matured on August 1 last, it was paid off by the transfer of a deficiency from the general account, the accrued sinking fund and balance of interest account being insufficient by £125 to cover the full amount. This payment, together with the fact that rates and interest due to the board had not been received, had resulted in the current year’s overdraft limit being exceeded to a considerable extent, and steps would have to be taken to secure further accomodation at the bank.
Although at the moment finance war causing some concern, consideration should soon be given to the question of providing the board’s own premises with offices and library. The present position was becoming intolerable, and should be remedied at the earliest possible moment. In adopting the report it was decided to apply to the bank for an extension of the overdraft limit, to £1250. The .board decided to hold a special meeting on Monday next to review its finances and to recommend economies where possible when considering the estimates for the ensuing year. CHAIRMAN ELECTED. CO-OPERATION REQUIRED. Mr. J. Williamson was last night unanimously elected chairman of the newly-elected Taradale Town Board. In returning thanks to the members for their confidence Mr. Williamson said he would use his best endeavours to carry out the duties imposed upon him to the best advantage of the district. In order to make a success of his office he desired the loyalty and co-operation of members at all times. He hoped that opposition, if any existed, would be set aside and that all would work for the betterment of the township. Judging from the returns placed before the board by the clerk in regard to the finance it would appear that the board was by no means out of the depression, a condition which, however, was now general among local bodies. It would be necessary for members to set about to overcome the difficulties that would confront the board.
Mn C. H. Williams was elected deputy-chairman.
