WAIKATO NOTES
For those jn search of winners at Avondale to-morrow the following notes on probable runners by the turi writer of the “Waikato Times” may bo of interest. Advance Camp is to keep his engagement in the Highweight Handicap. The Campfire gelding displayed winning form on three occasions as a hurdler last season, but he was off colour in his engagements over the Hatter part of the latest term. His owner-trainer, U. P. Buckenham, has had Advance Camp in work at To Rapa for some time, when he has given evidence that his recent spell has been beneficial. Thespis (9.13) will be well supported tor the highweight handicap. The Thespian—Rose Queen gelding came into prominence at the Pakuranga meeting where he won the Hunters’ hurdle race and the Ladies’ Bracelet Handicap. Thespis was never extended in the mite and a quarter flat engagement. Although he will meet a stronger field on Saturday, Thespis should be equal to the required improvement.
Baroscope is a fit horse. He is very prominently in the market for the Avondale Cup and will probably be the actual! favourite. The Weathervane— Tortrix gelding looks like being the hardest to beat with his handy weight. He has already won at nine furlongs, while he has a third placing to his credit at eleven furlongs and 40 yards. Baroscope is bred to stay, so there should be no reason to doubt his ability to run out the distance of the race ahead.
Royal Visitor will be ridden by P. M. Brady in his highweight engagements. Royal Visitor has shaped well in the fast work he has been given over a distance at Te Rapa and he will warrant consideration at the week-end. He has been nominated for the Hunt Cup Steeplechase at the Waikato Hunt meeting and for hurdle racing at the Wellington fixture. It is likely that the member of A. P. Brady’s team will have Trentham selected for him on Labour Day. If the southern trip is decided upon W. Rennie will be his pilot. L’Altegro is to be a local candidate for Avondale. The Day Comet—Lady Faithful gelding is engaged in the Champion Hack Plate. Although the class is good, L’Altegro has given sufficient evidence of his ability to indicate that he will be equal to a respectable effort. In his only start this season, L’Altegro, with 9.0, finished second to Sea Ruler in the Sylvia Park Handicap at the Pakuranga meeting, giving his Te Awamutu rival 141 b, There will be 111 b between the pair on Saturday. Following the August race referred to, L’Altegro was off the scene for a time with a cold, but he is again himself and has worked usefully at Te Rapa.of recent times.
Tradesman is to race with the sprinters at the week-end. The Waikato horseman, 0. Mclnally, will pilot the Raceful—Lady Birdwood gelding. Tradesman was on the track yesterday but he was not sent against the clock. He races well when fresh and his owner-trainer, H. T. Reilly, considers he is now sufficiently advanced for the needs. The opposition in the Flying Stakes includes several smart six-fur-long gallopers, but Tradesman is speedy and game and he will not disgrace himself.
