MASTERTON RACING CLUB

REVIEW OF THE FIELDS. Masterton’s one-day race meeting will be held on the Opaki racecourse tomorrow. Local stables will be represented by Cuddle, White Fang, Head Serang and Teller, whilst the local horseman, J. Green, has been engaged to ride the members of Mr. W. E. Bidwill’s stable as well as Cuddle and White Fang. Nursery Handicap, 4 furlongs: A few of these have raced and therefore may have profited by that experience. Epigram is said to be the makings of a good colt. Platter is well spoken of in private. Pegged Exchange, prior to Wanganui, enjoyed a great private reputation from Trentham, but in his first start failed to finish in the first four. He should, however, go much better this time. Plossian, by Plossus from Sanguinary, should do better later. Secrecy is said to be a smart filly, but is a little on the green side. Boudoir, by Lord Quex —Oddity goes fast and is one to be considered. The Rosewing filly, also from Mrs. Macdonald’s Awapuni stable, is very well spoken of and is reported to have recently “made a hack” of Hunter’s Moon over three furlongs. Lady Nan was unlucky at Napier when she finished third. The favourite may come from the Rosewing filly, Lady Nan and Boudoir.

Maiden Stakes, 6 furlongs; weight 8.8 and no allowances: Maypay, full sister to Autopay, was second at Otaki, her best effort to date. Rhea, if half as good as reputed, will cause the best trouble. Vaudeville has one or two minor placings to his credit. Headland has racing condition on his side, but, outside his good second last autumn at Manawatu, has little to recommend him. Cuddle, the local representative, by Psychology from Caress, is having her first public outing and, away from home for the first time, may be at a disadvantage. Still one must place a fair amount of confidence in this three-year-old filly, as she knows the way to gallop. The rest of the field, as far as the writer knows, are not exactly town-hall class. The order on the machine may read Bene Bell, Cuddle, Traymela. Highweight Handicap, one mile: Grecian was at one time a very fair sort. If anywhere near right, the Lord Quex —Ennea gelding would make a job of this opposition, but, as he has not raced for some time, he is probably not back to near his best. Full Marls was in the money the other day and must be very hard to dispose of. Blacksmith more than likely will be in want of a race or two. Head Serang will enjoy an abundance of local confidence, as this field is nowhere near as strong as the one he defeated at Gisborne. Cape Pariki, on form, does not appeal. Head Serang and Full Mark should dispute favouritism in this field of five.

Lansdowne Hack Handicap, 7 furlongs: Ben Hur is “iffy,” but, caught in the right mood, would not want for friends. Lyrical should go well on this big track. Solitaire 11. is only fair and has been disappointing. Forest Stag, with recent racing, should now appeal. Distortion is a fair hack, but in need of a race. Clangor might, but his form does not point that way. Minstrel Lad should go a good seven. Bothwell has pace, but his make up and colour do not suggest him being solid. The balance do not possess the necessary credentials just now. The best backed may be Forest Stag, Lyrical and Minstrel Lad. Masterton Handicap, mile: This track with its long straight sees a stayer at his best. Spearful, who won this race last year and later won the N.Z. Cup, is the virtual top-weight, but may require another race before being at his best. All tho same he would not surprise by gaining the major portion of tho stake. Chopin failed at Otaki, but was going well at tho final. The ■little fellow must appeal. Retract, on; his homo track, may bo the actual favourite, as reports all state the Hastings bred gelding to be showing his best form, but a little sore. Teller has no Hunting Cry to contend with this time and must go a good race. Stanchion, winner of the Wellington Cup the season before last, has no recent form to guide. Korokio won at Wanganui over seven and, with her pace and fitness, enters calculations. Atholspear is one of a kidney that does not appeal overmuch to racegoers. Joie de Vai is a possibility and Cluny should very soon bo coming back to his last summer’s form, and is going very

well. The betting market on the closing of the machine may read Cluny, Korokio, Chopin. Lawn Handicap (hack), 1 mile: Gay Court will appeal strongly among this opposition. Ben Hur and Lyrical are engaged in the race but one before. Kalmik and Acron have failed oft times. The remainder have not won a race among them. This field may not be a very strong one when the numbers go up, so Gay Court may be the favourite with Lyrical or Ben Hur, if started, next in demand. Grandstand Handicap, 6 furlongs: Royal Routine is a brilliant performer and, having won only last week over seven furlongs, will have a host of friends this time. Arrow Lad is a stable-mate, but has no racing condition at present. These two are not bracketed. Reserved for this race, Korokio would be strongly supported. White Fang, although galloping fairly, is not at his best just yet. Eminent, though still a hack, must be considered. The order on the tote may road Boyal Routine, Korokio, Eminent. Electric Hacu Handicap, bi furlongs: rhe largest field of the day. Bt. Koger is a fair hack, but with no recent form. Bolitaire 11. is at a distance when , she should show up. Hunter’s Moon was a good thing licked at Otaki, when he again hung out badly, but in this long straight he may be squared up more easily. Distortion may do better over this shorter course at present. Forest Stag appeals more in an earlier event. Azure goes fast. Clangor and Minstrel Lad also claim an earlier engagement. Lady Ronald ran a good race at Napier Park after being one of the last two to leave the barrier. She is liked tomorrow by her connections. King Peg is only fair, but is nicely handicapped. Araios is not running up to her track work. Very little can be said of the others to show them in a favourable light, although Thornproof has run one or two decent races at minor meetings. Hunter’s Moon, Lady Ronald .and Solitaire 11. may interest the public mostly. P.S.—Since writing this review White Fjyig has been responsible for a very attractive gallop on the Hastings tracks and now enters calculations.
