SYNOD’S SECOND SESSION YESTEROAY’B BUSINESS MOTIONS CONSIDERED. The second session of the 25th Synod of the Diocese of Waiapu was constituted at a service held in St. John’s Cathedral yesterday morning. The Bishop delivered his address after the secretary (Mr R. E. H. Pilson) had called the roll. The celebrant was Canon Mor timer-J ones, vicar of Has tings, who was assisted by the Ven Archdeacon W. E. Maclean, Epistoller and J. W. Butterfield, Gospeller. The afternoon session was opened at 2.30 m the Diocesan Hall, the Right Rev. D. Williams, Bishop of Waiapu presiding. The hours of session were fixed at 2.30 p.m. to 5.30 p.m. and 7.45 p.m. to 9.45 p.m.. The Rev, W. T. Drake was appointed clerical secretary, Mi J. P. Williamson, lay secretary, and the Rev. F. L. Frost, press secretary An invitation was received from the Maraenui Golf Club for members to make use of the club’s course. This was accepted with thanks. Sessional committees on finance, ie turns and accounts, and “Waiapu Church Gazette’’ were nominated by the president and approved. Mr H. H. Holderness was elected chairman of committees.
At the evening session Synod wen: into committee to consider reports and accounts. The reports and accounts of the Standing Committee, Dioceuian Trust Boards, Chaptv. Church Homes, Bishopric Endowment Trustees, Hereworth School Board, Te Aute Trust Board, Waerenga-a-hika Native School Trust, G. F. S. Lodge and the Pension Board were adopted. FIRST READING OF BILLS. , A bill intituled a statute to amend Canon XVII of the Waiapu Board of Diocesan Trustees Empowering Statute was read a first time, and the second reading made an order of the day for Friday. A bill intituled a statute to amend Canon XIV (part 1) of the Clergy Pension Fund was read a first time, and the second reading made an order of the day for to-day. A bill intituled the Parish Boundaries Statute, 1932, was read a first time and the second reading made an ord«w of the day for to-day.
MOTIONS. The following motion, moved by Mr P. F. Hunter and seconded by Mr J. P. Williamson, was carried:— “That Synod approves of the rollow mg resolution, passed by the Pension Board at its last annual meeting;--That, in the opinion of this board, it is desirable to wind up the fire insurance business at present carried on by the board and to transfer the »pitai accrued to the No. 2 Fund, and that this resolution be reported to the Synods of the dioceses of Auckland, Waiapu and Waikato for their opinion thereon.” Synod carried the following motion, moved by Mr R. E. H. Pilson, and seconded by Mr H. J. Bull:—(a) That a committee be set up to collate the reports of the Diocesan Synod and extract therefrom all statutes which have been passed and prepare copies of the same to be certified by the Bishop as the official records of the said Statutes and to be preserved in the archives of the Diocese, (b) That the committee consist of the Rt. Rev. the Bishop, Mr J, P. Williamson, Mr E. G. Lotim and the mover ” SUNDAY SCHOOLS. It was decided, on the motion of rhe Rev. Canon Hall, seconded by Mr G. K. Pasley, that a select committee be set up to consider the questionnaire on Sunday Schools recently sent to ah vicars, such committee to consist of the Ven. Archdeacon Maclean, Canon Mortimer Jones, Rev. S. F. N. Waymoutb and the mover. Mr Holderness moved and Mr Bull seconded; “That the finance committee bring before this session a schedule of quotas to be allotted to parishes and parochial districts to cover all diocesan needs as shown in the diocesan budget, for the 12 months to March 31, 1933, or to June 30, 1933, that date to be fixed for the end of the financial year.—This was carried THE MISSIONS. It was decided, on the motion of the Rev. N. F. Benham, seconded by Canon E. D. Rice, “That the Canon of the
missionary stall be respectfully requested to send out notices at the end of March to all parishes and parochial districts informing them how far their quotas have been met up to that date; also that efforts be made to arrange for missionary speakers to visit the various districts in the course of the year, in order to quicken interest in the missionary work of the Church for which we are all responsible.” The Rev. N. F. Benham moved and Archdeacon seconded: “That it be an instruction to the ‘Gazette’ committee to consider the question of obtaining advertisements for the ‘Diocesan Gazette’, thus enabling them to improve the paper; and further that it be a recommendation to the clergy to send in brief parish notes at regular intervals to the editor for insertion.” A quiet day in connection with the Diocesan Synod of Waiapu was observed in the Ormond Chapel on Wednesday. Stimulating addresses were delivered by the Rev. Canon Percival-James, of Wellington, on the difficulties, the duties and the dignity of the ministerial office. Bishop and Mrs Williams kindly entertained the members present to luncheon. Synod yesterday cordially thanked Canon James for his services.
