THE NAPIER CLUB LAST SEASON REVIEWED REPORT OF YEAR’S WORK The following is the thirty-sixth annual report of the Napier Swimming Club which is to be presented to the annual meeting to be held to-morrow evening:— “In retiring your committee has pleasure in presenting the annual report and balance sheet for 1931-32 and is able to report another highly successful season. Thanks to the fine weather experienced prior to Christmas it was possible to make an early start with the season’s programme and overcome much of the disorganisation resulting from the earthquake. “Finance.—As will be seen from the balance sheet the club’s financial position continues in a healthy manner, the year’s operations resulting in an increased credit balance. “Opening Night.—The club was fortunate on the opening night in having the polo team of the visiting cruiser H.M.B. Diomede as one of the star attractions, The weather was not by any means favourable to our efforts, the water being particularly cold. “Activities —The wise policy of encouraging the interchange of visits between the various clubs in the centre has been continued, the clubs visited being Havelock North, Mahora and Heretaunga. On Saturday February 13 a strong contingent of the club’s swimmers attended the Danneyirke club’s carnival. A number of events were participated in and an exhibition game of polo' played between Napier club’s A and B teams Our members greatly appreciated the hospitality so enthusiastically offered by the Dannevirke swimmers, and all returned highly pleased with the excursion. WATER POLO POPULAR. “Polo,—The club’s past policy of fostering water polo in the centre is now beginning to bear fruit. After having held the Henry Williams Memorial Polo Cup for seven consecutive seasons the cup was lost to a strong Te Awa team, which included two exmembers of this club. The Heretaunga team also showed remarkable improvement under the able leadership of our late coach Mr Carl Atkinson, which resulted in their being the ultimate winners of the cup We extend our congratulations to the Heretaunga club on their success With the interest taken and the strength of the various teams, it should be possible for Hawke’s Bav to entei a strong team for the water polo < '"anipionship at the national swimming champion- 1

ships to be held in Hawke’s Bay this season. The ladies also are falsing a keen interest in the game, and several ongnt games were witnessed in the Napier Baths “Carnival.— Notwithstanding the depression your committee decided to Hold am open carnival and with the splendid support accorded by the pubu ? l w ™ lners was highly success!<’c bot , financially and natatorially. bocml.—At the close of the season a social for the junior members was ovlr an 4, proved to as popular as ever, the various cups and trophies a el -D Presented to the winners by Mr S. r. bpiller during the course of the evening. l(Jrn e nf r +t 1 ’~ I J iS with regret that We Il aril of the indisposition of Mr Bond, whuse severe illness has made it imi possible for him to resume his position as baths manager. Mr Bond has in the R 1 ™I d ,°,n e much to assist swimming at the baths, and we feel sure that all will " J w a speedy recovery. for Ihmr V 6 to .f hal , lk the baths staff L. consideration and co-opera-tion regarding many of the problems that have faced us. We are grateful, also to the press for their continued’ assistance to the sport of swimming. BATH CHARGES. ‘‘Bath Charges.—Had it not been for the various competitions etc., held a substantial loss on the year's work- £ g t h W °h ,d ?Y e resullt€d - This is due to the high charge made for the baths of f9 b oP lgllts ' VV ’h er « as a fixed charge £2 2/- is mad© for carnivals a charge of one half of the gross tairings is made for club nights. This has amounted to as much as £6 on so ne nights. If the clubs are to carry on it is imperative that a reduction in this charge is made. “Baths Hours.—ln view of the prevailing warm weather and the fact that the New Zealand championships are to be held ;n Hawke’s Bay this season, your committee considers that the Borough Commissioner, Mr Brrton should be approached with a view to having the baths opened of an evening and on Sunday afternoons (weather permitting). Besides tending to populai ise the baths and swimming generally by inducing the public to make an early, start, it is considered that the additional revenue would amply compensate the council. On the occasion of the excursion from Wellington on Sunday last, it was iioticed that upwards of fifty people were compelled to disrobe on the beach. This does not tend to popularise Napier. “Learn to Swim Week.—lt is proposed to organise a “Learn to Swim Week” as has been done so successfully in other centres. The last week of the school year has been suggested as a suitable time, as the ixamina.tions would then be over. ]f tho suggestion is given effect to, it would enable many to learn to swim prior to the Christinas holidays—a period during which there are usually rimerous drowning fatalities, owing to people being unable to swim. “Conclusion.—ln conchision your committee is looking forward to a par-1

ticularly successful season. This will only be obtained by the co-operation of all the club members.” THE HERETAUNGA CLUB. FIRST EXECUTIVE MEETING. <t the first executive meeting for the scafon last night, Mr L. J. Fisher presided over a full attendance, when arrangements were made for the coming season. Officials were appointed as follows.Announcer Mr D. Mclvor; check starters, Messrs J. Scott and V. Wall; referee, Mr C. McGregor; delegates to H.B. Centre, Messrs H. B. Poppeiwell and L. J. Fisher; call stewards, Messrs G. Geddis and W. Hollander; final stewards, Messrs W. G. Waymouth iind L. Andrews; custodian, Mr K. McKenzie; ladies’ stewards, Mesdames Wall and Hood; gatekeeper, Mr T. Millie. it was decided to open the baths in the evenings (club hours, 7 p.ni. to 9 p.m.) commtncing next Monday, and the secretary advised that membership tickets were now available. The sub-committee reported that the pool had been painted white, and that very favourably comments had been made on the appearance, the process being considered a great success. , The matter of the annual combined meeting of the three local clubs was discussed, when it was resolved to convene it for Tuesday, October 18, in the Chamber of Commerce room. The secretary was instructed to enquire from the Havelock and Mahora Clubs whether' this date was suitable.
