BOWLING

THE SEASON OPENED A GOOD START MADE. OMABUNUI GET GOING ON SATURDAY.

(By

“Roamer.”)

The 1932-33 bowling season was ushered in with beautiful weather last Saturday, when a large crowd was in attendance at the Napier Club’s green, where the Centre’s official opening ceremony took place.

There was also a good crowd at Wairere and Waipukurau, all clubs bein; represented by a full rink. The greens were in very fair playing order, and promise to stand the wear and tear of the season’s play well. Omarunui set “kitty” rolling next Saturday, and the following week Hastings and Kia Toa put down the mats. St. Leonards open on Labour Day, and Havelock North on October 29.

Judging by the enthusiasm already displayed, bowling is going to have a very successful season. Most of the gaps in the ranks have been filled by new members, so that on the aggregate the number of playing members is not much below that of the last few years. It behoves the older members of clubs to look after those who have just joined up, and see to it that they receive a fair share of play. It is not good policy to leave new players on the hank. They must be coached and trained so that they can take part in competitions. Remember, you were onee a beginner yourself. Teams for Saturday. The following team from Havelock North will travel to Omarunui next Saturday:—Boyle, Toulmin, Oldham, A. L. Allen. Dominion Tournament. The authorities are now busy making preparations for the Dominion tournament to be held in Wellington, commencing Monday, January 9. The singles are to be played on 9th and 10th and the pairs on the 11th and 12th. An innovation is to be made this year with the pairs, namely, that players will use three bowls instead of four. This is a time-saving device, and it will be interesting to see how it works. When each man has to put down four bowls undoubtedly a lot of time is taken up, in addition to which there is the fact that so many bowls always give one a chance of having “something to rest on.” With three bowls players will find that they will have to be more careful than ever with their drawing, both to the jack and with position shots. The rink tournament commences on Friday, January 13. Neither the day nor the date seem propitious—at any rate those who lose their games on that day may feel that the old superstition, has something in it after all —but everyone will have to houe for the best. There will be four days’ section play in the rinks, two games of 25 heads each per day. Post-section play will be on the twolife system, three games of 21 heads each per day. Entries close on Saturday, December 10. Hawke’s Bay has always been well represented at Dominion tourneys at Wellington, and it is on the cards that there will be quite a number going down from Hastings in January.

One piece of news that will interest intending competitors at the big tournament is contained in a little circular issued by the secretary of the New Zealand Bowling Association, Mr. L. McNabb. This gives the tariffs of 16 hotels and nine private hotels, and it will be noted that these have been “greatly reduced, in some cases by nearly 50 per cent., and the concessions should be an added incentive to bowlers to come to Wellington for the tournament.” Any competitors desiring information that is not included in the circulars sent to their club secretary may obtain it on application to Mr. McNabb, whose postal and telegraphic address is “Fowlds’ Building, Wellington. Mr. McNabb also mentions that he is prepared to book accommodation for those who so desire, on receipt of particulars. Dunedin Centre’s Anniversary. This year marks the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Dunedin Bowling Centre, which came into existence on November 1, 1907. It is intended to celebrate the occasion in some suitable manner. It is suggested that so far as the clubs are concerned a good way to do this would be to hold a “back to the green” day.
