A WONDERFUL VIOLINIST
The great violinist Szigeti has created unprecedented enthusiasm in New Zealand and many Southern Hawke’s Bay residents motored to Palmerston North last week to hear him perform there. At that concert the artist was said to create an atmosphere which was almost uncannily musical. When his accompanist played the opening Concerto by Beethoven, Szigeti turned the pianist’s pages and then played his own part with an absorbing interest which was at once communicated to the audience. Szigeti alto played a great deal without any accompaniment. People who had travelled widely and the best known among the Palmerston North musical community agreed that this violinist is without doubt one of the world’s greatest. Speaking to a Palmerston North violinist after the concert Szigeti said that he had felt that he had played speciality well at the concert given on the previous Tuesday in Wellington. That concert came through perfectly to many listeners-in when broadcast last Tuesday and was indeed a rare musical treat. Szigeti, who is only 39, hopes to return to New Zealand again in 1 four years’ time.
