WOMEN’S INSTITUTE
OMAKERE BRANCH The monthly meeting of the Omakere Women’s Institute was held in the Omakere Hall. There was a good attendance of members, and five new members were enrolled. A “Scottish” afternoon had been arranged, heather and bluebells being very much in evidence. Mrs H. Baird, of Hastings, entertained those present with a most interesting talk on her recent visit to Scotland and many places of historic interest that had been visited during the tour. The talk was concluded with the humorous recitation “Seeking for Ezra,” from the “Little Minister,” by J. M. Barrie. A very hearty vote of thanks was accorded Mrs Baird. The prize winners of the “Scotch shortbread” competition were: Mrs Sutherland first, Mrs Pithy second. The roll call, “Uses of the Lemon,” brought forth many useful hints. The voting for the competition, “article made and the ideas excellent. Mrs. H. Mawson was awarded first prize and Mrs. Cole second. Miss Mawson’s entry deserves special mention, it being a model of the Omakere Hall, and a very clever piece of work indeed. A delicious afternoon tea was provided by the hostesses; Mesdames Goulding, Logan and Spotswood. Community singing of “Scotch favourites,” and the National Anthem brought a very successful afternoon to a close.
