COASTAL VESSEL HELD UP
TWO MEN SEARCHED.
CREW TAKES EXCEPTION. Auckland, Oct. 4. Owing to a dispute with the crew, the Westport Coal Company’s steamer Canopus is held up here. It is stated that the hold-up is the result of • private dispute with the master of the vessel.
According to the men two of their number were searched by the captain on the ground that stores had been missed. The remainder considered this an unjustified slight and protested. The vessel was to have sailed for Westport at 10 p.m. yesterday, but the cargo work delayed her for another hour. The crew then refused to take the vessel to sea until some amends had been made to the two men. The crew will be paid off to-morrow, and if a new crew is not forthcoming the vessel will be laid up.
