OTTAWA SURVEY
“OUTSTANDING SUCCESS"
MR BRUCE BROADCASTS. HOPE FOR RISE IN PRICES. New York, Aug. 30. Mr Bruce, speaking at 7.30 this morning on a short .wave broadcast in an effort to reach Australia, briefly surveyed the achievements of the Ottawa Conference, particularly regarding Australia. He praised the spirit of mutual helpfulness animating the delegates, particularly the efficient cooperation of his colleagues on the Australian delegation. He said: “The conference was an outstanding success and constitutes a tribute to the character and .wisdom of the British peoples throughout the world. No atmosphere of bargaining in order to obtain unfair advantages existed. ’ ’ He declared that the agreement reached w’ith Britain would result in very real advantages to Australia. With the exception of wool, where the circumstances rendered assistance in the British market impossible, Britain was now according us preference over almost the whole field of our trade with the Mother Country.
Mr Bruce said that the British delegates realised the necessity for raising commodity prices. They were also convinced that the American administration had the same objective. “With rising prices Australia’s position will be assured.” HELP TO GENERAL REVIVAL. MB STEWART’S OPINION. New York, Aug. 30. The New Zealand Minister of Finance, Mr W. Downie Stewart, arrived from Ottawa en route for London. Discussing the conference, he said that although the agreements reached would divert some trade from outside countries, such as the United States, the revival of trade within the Empire would help to restore buying in the different countries. Mr Stewart said that the Ottawa agreements were not directed against other countries, but would be helpful by stimulating the Empire economically. Though the CanadianBritish agreement diverts United States trade, the policy involves no hostile attitude towards the United States.
