FOR BRITISH ARMY AUSTRALIA SECURES CONTRACT. HIGH PRICES OFFERBD. (United Frees A.ssoclatlon-By CablsConyright.) (Received 13, 10.0 a.m.) Ottawa, Aug. 12. Australia secured ths British Army frozen meat contract, amounting to nearly 1000 head of cattle a week for six months from next September to March. The pricei are considerably above the present levels and will have an important uplifting effect in the Australian meat trade. Angliss and Coy.’i share of the contract amounts to from 400 to 500 head of cattle a week. Mr. Angliaa received cabled news from London thia afternoon. He belie vea that Borthwick’s and other companies are also sharing. Mr. Angliss is gratified. He understands that tho new contract went to Australia on a purely competitive and not on a sentimental basis, the Argentine tenders being higher. The contract will help to liquidate accumulated stocks of frozen beef and mutton in London and Australia and also on the water. Even if the contractors lose money towards the end of the period in consequence of the expected general rise in prices following the Ottawa Conference Mr. Angliss says that the contractors will not mind because it will be so much the better for Australia. Prices such as to ensure profitable business in the early stage of delivery represent tho first ray of suusflbue for months. The arrangement is to supply also some thousand carcases of sheep, tho British Government having the right to decide to take mutton instead of beef if the mutton is lower. The first deliveries, commencing in September, can probabl- be made ex-store in London.
