J, Playne, controller of the estates division of the Public Trust Office, has returned South after an official visit to Waipukurau. Mr G. A. Glover, of the staff of the local railway station, has been transferred to Taihape, and leaves Waipukurau on Monday. His position will be filled by Mr K. H. Urbahn, of Ohakune. Mrs Edgecombe (senior), who was laid up some time ago with a severe illness, has suffered a relapse from which her many friends in Central Hawke’s Bay district will wish her a speedy recovery.

The Otane Wednesday team defeated Waipukurau Old Girls in a match at Otane by 25 goals to 9. On Thursday afternoon the Otane Al team visited Waipawa and were defeated by the Waipawa District High School A team by 18 goals to 13. A couple of “howlers” recently provided by girl scholars in a Central Hawke’s Bay public school: “Temporal means a kind of dental filling. ” “ Temporal is the same as being a prohibitionist. ’ ’

The Mortgagors’ Belief Commission sat in Waipukurau on Thursday and again yesterday. The chairman is Mr B. 8. Chadwick, of Dannevirke, and the other two members are Messrs J. H. JoU (Havelock North) and M. Greenwood (Hastings). Messrs P. G. Lewis and E. Bissell, of the Education Department, who inspected the Takapau public school on Monday and Tuesday, have for the past three days been engaged on an official visit to the Waipukurau District High School and St. Joseph’s Convent. Earlier, Messrs McCaskill, Lewis and Bissell paid a visit of inspection to the Otane School.

The Rugby team from St. Patrick’s College, which is to play Te Aute College at Waipawa this afternoon, passed through Waipukurau by train yesterday. The members of the team, who were sporting their well-known colours, blue and white, were greeted at the Waipukurau station by officials of the SubUnion. On arrival at their destination they were met by Waipawa members of the management committee and conveyed tb private homes, where they are guests for the week-end. The principal event in the social sphere next week will be the annual school ball, which on this Occasion is to be a plain dress function. On Friday afternoon the scholars break up for the spring vacation.

MAGISTRATE’S COURT SITTING. From Our Own Correspondent. Yesterday’s sitting of the Magistrate’s Court was very brief, there being no criminal cases. Dr. Kendall and Mr W. E. Yates, J.P.’s, were on the bench. This is the fourth month in succession that the work has had to be done by justices. On the list were five civil cases and seven judgment summonses, which were beyond the jurisdiction of justice's, and a considerable amount of inconvenience has been caused. Judgment was entered up for plaintiffs by default in the following civil cases:—Una Davis V. M. Walker, 18s, costs £3; W. Yardley v. Stan. Barlow, £3 5s 7d, costs £1 5s fid; H. R. Duncan v. Leonard Wilson, £3 2s 6d, costs £1 5s fid; Limbriek Bros. v. J. L. Mowatt, 7s fid, costs 8s; same v. A. Macdonald, 15s, costs 8s) T. H. Roach v. Claud Mudgway, £3 19s, costs £1 7s fid.

In a defended case L. C. Bond claimed £1 4s from Beatrice Hereock, balance owing on an order for six chairs. Defendant admitted having received the chairs, but stated that they were not up to standard, two requiring repairs after only a few months ’ use. The Bench reduced the amount of the claim by 2s and gave judgment for the balance, With costs 10s. GENERAL NEWS. A very enjoyable time was spent last evening in St. Peter’s Hall when a concert, “500"’ drive and dancing was held under the auspices of the Home and School League. Two choruses from the pupils of Stds. V. and Vl. under the conductorship of Mr Hobin. were very well rendered. Songs were also rendered by Misses Robinson and Grenside. Recitations were given by Mieses Major and Willis. The prize-wipnera

in the “500” drive were Mrs Dailey (ladies) and Mr Weeden (gentlemen). A very nice supper was provided. The committee worked very hard and it must be very encouraging to have met with such a good success. A most enjoyable concert was given in the Municipal Theatre on Thursday evening by the Trinity Choir, from Napier, but unfortunately, owing to bad weather, the attendance was not large. Five selections were rendered by the choir under the baton of Mr Edwards, these including the “Hallelujah Chorus” from “The Messiah.” The programme included two quartettes and solos by Misses Buckingham, Dykes, Collister, Mr Sutherland and the Rev. E. T. Olds, two recitations were given by Miss Clothier, and Mr Thompson rc counted a number of stories. After the concert the visitors were entertained at supper by members of the Methodist congregation. GOLF. Following is the draw for a knock*out foursome to be played by members of the Ladies’ Golf Club for trophies donated by Miss .d’Emden. Eaoh pair plays every other pair best ball on handicap:—Mrs Limbriek and Mrs Edwards, Miss Witherow and Miss Mil burn, Miss d’Emden and Miss McLean, Mrs Strang and Miss Butler, Mrs Woods and Miss Beck, Miss Rathbone and Mrs Minogue, Miss Walker and Miss Wills, Mrs H. Rathbone and Miss M. King, Miss Clark and Miss M. Clark. The ladies will hold a one-day tournament on August 30th. BOROUGH COUNCIL. '/ MONTHLY MEETING. At the monthly meeting of the Waipawa Borough Council last evening all the members were present, the Mayor, Mr G. Hunt, presiding. E. Bibby was granted a gas and sewerage connection for a new house in Mathews street. An application for remission of the penalty on a property owner’s unpaid rates was not entertained. The secretary of the Power Board draw attention to trees overhanging Domain road. The town clerk reported that the matter was being attended to. The Hospital Board advised that the council’s levy for the next quarter would be £26 Is 2d. Several residents in Bennett street applied for an additional street light. The application was deferred. The caretaker of the theatre buildings reported that a number of electric lamps had been stolen from the office and concert hall The Fire Brigade Committee was instructed to confer with the Fire Brigade in regard to interference with theatre lights. The gas manager reported that during the month 430,600 cubic feet of gas had been made, a decrease of 31,600 on the corresponding month of last year. One new gas cooker and one gas copper had been installed.

The overseer reported that the relief workers were at present employed in reducing the grade of Waverly street, which Would take about a fortnight. Tree planting had been done on various borough reserves and Coronation Park had had a thorough clean up. It was decided to plant additional ornamental trees in the domain and also at the entrance to the cemetery. The pay sheet amounting to £1072 2s 9d was adopted.

OTANE ITEMS CRICKET MEETING. From Our Own Correspondent. The Otane Cricket Club held a very satisfactory meeting on Thursday night. Keen interest and enthusiasm was shown to revive the old club, many new players being available. Mr Jas. Ashby occupied the chair. Mr J. N. Barrio was elected treasurer, and Mr O. R. Page secretary.
