HORSE FAIR

ENCOURAGING TO BREEDERS. The successful horse fair held at Stortford Lodge yesterday should give farmers in the district encouragement again to commence breeding draughts and half-draughts. At one time the breeding of this type of horse was a most profitable side-line for numerous farmers, but the advent of tractors and lorries served to check this farming practice. Farmers are now convinced that this has not altogether been a wise departure, as overhead charges have increased with a corresponding decrease in the returns received from the farm. In the entry offered yesterday, a number of useful mares wore sold, and

bred with the right type of Clydesdale stallion, should serve as a nucleus for re-eatablishing breeding. The large consignment of horses from Gisborne was offered on account of Mr. P. McVerry, the well-known stock dealer from Southern Hawke’s Bay. This consignment on the whole were just the right class for the small dairy farmer, being a very useful type of half-draught. Rather a large proportion of this consignment remained unsold, the price offered not being up to the vendor’s ideas of value. From the fact that outside buyers made large purchases at yesterday’s sale, it would seem that local buyers have not generally recognised the shortage of this class of horse. The following are some of the sales made yesterday:— On account of Mr. P. C. Ward, Otane —4 draught geldings and mares at £3O, £3O, £3l, and £36. On account of Mr. P. McVerry, Dannevirke—Half draught mares and geldings, £29, £26 10/-, £22, £27 10/-, £24, £2O, £2O, £25, £24, £l2, £ll, £l5 10/-, £8 10/-, £22, £2l, £24 10/-, £2O. On account of Mr. G. F.
