NEWS AND NOTES. (Special Representative.) Six babies were born at the Rathbone Maternity Hospital during the month of May, according to the report of the Matron (Miss L. Bridge) to the Waipawa Hospital Board yesterday. The Matron (Miss C. I. Drummond) in her monthly report to the Waipawa Hospital Board stated: “Sister Black commenced duty on the first of the month. Sister Cairns, Nurses Trotter and Howard are away on holiday. Miss Mary Harding, who has been off duty for nearly a year, is now back doing light duty. She expresses, in a letter, appreciation of the treatment received from the board.” At the meeting of the Waipawa Hospital Board yesterday the secretary (Mr P. R. Smyrk) told a story of how he had “fallen” for the tale of a man who was “right down on his uppers.” He had given him an order for a new pair of boots, but regretted it, however. when he learned that the man had immediately gone off to Napier and pawned them. The Waipukurau County Council intends to strike general rates on the unimproved value basis as. follow:— Hatuina riding fd in the £; Mt. Herbert, Jd; and Ihirimu Id For hospital levy purposes a rate of 29/100ths d in the £ is to be struck over the whole of the county. The sum required for the latter need is £783 15/3.
