BRITISH OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP. 110 QUALIFY. (United Press Association —By Cable— Copyright.) (Received 8, 12.45 p.m.) Loudon, June 7. One hundred and ten with scores of 157 find under qualified for the open golf championship. They include Bradbeer (70-71), the leader, E. Mcßuvie (75-69), Curtis (76-69), R. Whitcombe (76-70), MacDonald Smith (73-73), Mitchell (73-73), Armour (75-71), Duncan (74-73), W. Hartley (73-74), Padgham (72-76), Havers (71-77), Compston (71-78), Saraz.cn (73-76), Easterbrook (75-74), Dallemague (72-78), Dobson (72-78), Twine (75-76), Ray (73-78), Michael Scott (73-80), Robson (79-74), Cotton (76-78), Torrance (7871), De Forest (74-77), Miyamoto, Japanese (73-79), Hodson (82-71), Rex Hartley (82-75). A perfect, windless day enabled amazing golf, despite the expectation that Sandwich, which the longest championship course, would tax competitors’ hitting powers. However, the record was twice smashed. R. Whitcombe first returned 70, compared with bogey 79, and half an hour later Eric Mcßuvie, aged 22, a Scottish amateur, who won the Irish championship, returned 69, which Don Curtis, the longhitting Bournemouth professional, almost immediately equalled. Nevertheless, Bradbeer, with a faultless 71, continued to lead
Mcßuvie’s is regarded as the most impressive record-breaking performance. In soundness and accuracy he was almost perfection. He played straight down the middle from the tee and only required his iron for second shots. His longest putt was eight yards Sarazen says he has not seen a player of such promise at his age.
