CENTRAL H.B WAIPUKURAU
NEWS AND NOTES. (Special Representative.) Mr W. P. Smith has returned from his urgent visit to Hawera. The condition of Miss N. Moriarity, who is a patient in Sister Anderson’s private hospital, is reported to be unchanged. That anyone, apart from the moral aspect, should go to the trouble —quite unnecessary in view of the operations of the Waipukurau Citizens’ Relief Committee —of breaking into a butcher’s shop and helping himself to a few prime cuts, gives rise only to amazement. Yet one night last week Messrs Clarry and Company’s premises were enterea through a gauze window at the rear. No attempt was made to interfere with the safe, and the burglar’s haul consisted solely of meat, so that the burglar may safely be acquitted on any really serious charge. Suffering from some obscure internal complaint, the town clock stopped late on Saturday. For several months deprived of “the time” by the earthquake, the public of Waipukurau have greatly appreciated the convenience of the new clock and it is hoped that it will soon be restored to working order. In a friendly Rugby match played on Saturday, St. Andrew’s Bible Class team defeated St. Mary’s by 6 points to 3. Tries for the winners were scored by L. Chapman and J. Dixon, while for the losers, P. James gained a try. Mr J. Anderson refereed the match, which was the second played this season, the Presbyterians winning the previous game by 32 to nil.
