BOXING
HAWKE'S BAY ASSOCIATION ANNUAL MEETING HELD GENERAL BUSINESS The annual meeting of the Hawke’s Bay Boxing Association was held in Hastings last evening, when Mr A. M. Brodie presided over a good attendance of members In moving the adoption of the annual report (previously published), the chairman said that he had pleasure in recording the fact that the association had enjoyed a successful year. The association had staged seven professional contests, and four amateur tournaments. Considering the conditions prevailing generally he thought this a creditable performance. A small profit had been made on the contests and in addition an amateur tourney staged on behalf of the Hastings unemployed had netted £25 for that cause and another tourney had realised £l5 for the Hawke’s Bay Rifle Club. The report was adopted without discussion as was the balance sheet which showed a profit of £l9 4/1 had been made on the various contests though on the year’s workings there had been a loss of 4/-. The election of officers resulted as follows:—Patron, Mr Jno. Chambers; president, Mr H. M. Campbell, M.P.; vice-presidents, Messrs G. D. Beatson and J. M. Curtis; committee, Messrs H. G. Apperley, A. M. Brodie, W. Baillie, V. H Colello, J Dexter, R. Gray, A. M. Herbert, E. Little, D. H. Newbigin, P. C. Petersen; honorary secretary, Mr J. Stickland; honorary treasurer, J. D. Donovan.
The subscription for the ensuing year was fixed at £1 1/- plus 2/- tax, the same as last year. A vote of thanks was passed to Mr J. D. Donovan for the use of his premises for meetings etc., and for his valuable services given in other directions during the year. Votes of thanks were passed to Messrs J. Anderson and H. Poppelwell who did not seek re-election on the committee. Both had been active members of the association for many yeats and had given valuable service. Messrs Jno. Chambers, D. H. Newbigin and A. M. Brodie, (who donated medals), J. Stickland, the honorary secretary, R. Grey and D, J. Newbigin (judges), W. Baillie, (official second), V. H. Collelo, and E. Little, (timekeepers), and A. M. Herbert (who accommodated amateur boxers on occasions for the evening free of charge). The press and the medical officers were also thanked for services rendered. The secretary reported that there had been boxing tourneys arranged at the Mahora and Parkvale schools and it was suggested that a shield be donated for inter-school contests, and competition to be open to all primary schools in the district and conducted under the auspices of the Hawke’s Bay Boxing Association. He urged the member to give the matter thought, pointing out that the progress of the sport depended on the encouragement of lads, some of whon, had taken part in a recent tourney. At a meeting of the committee later, Mr Dudley Newbigin was appointed chairman. It was decided to open the season with an amateur tournament in the Hastings Municipal Theatre on Thursday, April 21. Arrangements are to be made to match Johns and Hughes. Eight new members were elected to the association.
