The first-class postage rate was increased from two to three cents, for a period of two years on Wednesday by the House of Representatives in the expectation of its yielding 135,000,000 dollars. The postage increase is the largest single revenue raiser in the Ways and Means Committee’s substitute for the sales tax. The House accepted a steady stream of the committee’s proposals. The taxes on telegraph, telephone and radio messages is estimated to produce 35,000,000 dollars, and the ten per cent, amusement tax is expected to yield 40,000,000 dollars.
