TIKOKINO SPORTS

MOST SUCCESSFUL MEETING VERY LARGE ATTENDANCE EVENTS KEENLY CONTESTED The new Mathews Memorial Park at Tikokino received its sports baptism on Easter Saturday, when it was used by the Tikokino Sports Club for the first time for its annual sports meeting. But it was a baptism without the usual sprinkling of water, for the Tikokino Sports Club had its usual good fortune in the matter of weather for the day was fine throughout. In the splendid Mathews Memorial Park, the sports bodies of Tikokino have a ground so spacious and so well laid out as to be unsurpassed, if, indeed, it is even equalled by any other sports ground in the province. The course was so admirably arranged that the horse and athletic events could be seen from the same viewpoints, as they were in the same arena, while the chopping and sawing events were in a separate enclosure adjacent. The attendance was larger than at any other sports meeting this season, and was almost up to the record attendances of 1929 and 1930. The meeting was, from a sporting point of view, the best in the history of the club. Entries for running, cycling, and horse events were a record for the club, and the contests were also the best. The jumping in the horse events could not well have been beaten and so old and experienced a judge as Mr J. H. Macniven found the task of selecting the ' winners no easy one. The judges in the running and cycling and chopping and. sawing also had some exceptionally close finishes to decide, and did their work remarkably well, except that in one instance, the final of the ladies’ 100 yards handicap, Miss N. Henderson, who appeared to win by at least two feet, was apparently overlooked by the judge and was not placed. The handicappers, Mrs J. Coughlan (running ana cycling) and Mr D. Howse (sawing and chopping), scored a triumph, for in not a single instance did the events result in other than a close finish. Mr W. Pettit and Mr J. Watkins, timekeepers, and the starters, Messrs A. Fraser and J. H. Nicholl, each gave the utmost satisfaction.

The honorary secretary and treasurer Mr Carl Petersen, though carrying out those duties for the first time, was really a host in himself and had everything so well arranged that the programme was got through in good style. A variety of side shows appeared to do a good business. A first class luncheon was provided. The dance held in the Oddfellows’ Hall in the evening was a big success in every way.
