FIRE IN COAL BUNKERS
ULIMAROA RUSHES TO SYDNEY. NO REAL DANGER. Sydney, Feb. 9. The Ulimaroa’s extra early arrival this morning is now explained by the disclosure that a fire occurred in the coal bunkers over night 100 miles from Sydney. Few of the passengers were aware of it. The crew worked silently early this morning and opened a bunker hatch just aft of the funnel. Meanwhile smoke was pouring into the engine room and stokehold. Precautions were taken to increase the speed and water was poured into the hold. The vessel made port three hours earlier than usual. The officers state that the ship was never in danger. The fire was soon under control. Reports are being submitted to the company. The Huddart Parker Co. declare that there is no need for concern over the fire on the Ulimaroa. They resent the publicity given the affair and point out that smouldering coal in the bunkers is not by any means a rare occurrence. The engineers dealt with the problem quite easily.
