SECRET FORMULA
SPAHLINGER TREATMENT REVEALED TO MEDICAL MEN. ANYONE ABLE TO REPRODUCE METHOD. London, Jan. 29. Spahlinger has despatched the secret formula of his anti-tubercle vaccine to leading British medical and scientific bodies. The Marquess of Crewe, in announcing this, said lie hop’d the publication of the formula would end the adverse criticism of Spahlinger. Sir Frederick Maurice said the cost of supplying the vaccine is now 2s, compared with £2 when the expen ■ ments began, but Spahlinger’s family fortune had been dissipated, necessitating advancing funds on the security of the formula, the release of which is dun to the generosity of the Aga Khan, the Duke of Westminster and others. .Spahlinger provided a uovino vaccine for the immunisation of cattle and a harmless vaccine for human beings. Fifteen years of tests had established tho cfficiacy of the bovine vaccine, the principles underlying the application of which are applicable to other diseases besides tuberculosis. Sir Bruce Bruce-Porter said tne vaccine contained no living microorganism and was, therefore, riskless.
Spahlinger grew tubercle bacilli iu an environment identical with that in diseased bodies. Thereafter he established conditions resulting in the natural death of the bacilli, which thereby retained their chemical and physical structure, making material for the preparation of vaccined agents. Hitherto material for the preparation of vaccines has been isolated by animal passage, with the subsequent culture on artificial media differing from the original environment, thus altering the character of the bacillus and rendering vaccine so prepared valueless to deal with disease in the animal or group whence the bacillus was originally taken.
Publication of the formula has eu nbled anyone to reproduce the method,
