A NOTABLE CONCERT
TO BE GIVEN IN HASTINGS. BY LOCAL AND LEADING ARTISTS. On Monday, February 8, Hastings people will be given the opportunity of hearing what will without doubt be one of the most notable concerts ever given in the town. Both local and visiting artists have been engaged, and the programme will consist of vocal and instrumental items of rare interest.
Among the visiting artists are Mr. Claude Tanner, A.R.A.M., a Wellington musician who studied for five years at the Royal Academy of Music, London, afterwards holdLig the position of subprofessor of the ’cello at the Academy for three years.' He has given recitals in London, Paris, New York, Buenos Aires, and in many other parts of the world. Miss Dorothy Edwards, L.R.A.M., violinist, is the new music mistress at Nga Tawa College, Marton, and has recently arrived from England, where she is well known on the concert platform. Miss Gwen McLeod (pianoforte), is a Hawke’s Bay resident who, as a pupil at lona, won an Associated Board Exhibition in 1029, and later studied at the Royal College of Music London, with Harold Samuel and Edwin Benbow, two great pianists. She received considerable praise from Sir Hugh Allen, Director of the College. Among local performers is Miss Dorothy Symonds, a contralto of rare quality w r ho is well known to Hawke’s Bay audiences, particularly as a successful competitor in the annual competitions and as a performer over the wireless.
Mrs. Evelyn Barley, also a local performer, is also well known as a competition winner, and needs no introduction to local audiences, who have always been most appreciative of her fine singing.
It will bo pleasant news that the Napier Male Quartette, whoso unforgettable performance was so greatly appreciated at ’ Hastings Orchestral Society’s concert in October last, will take part in the concert to-night week. Mrs. W. C. Whitloek, who is organising the concert, together with Miss Edwards, Miss Williamson, L.R.A.M., A.R.C.M., Mrs. Blair, A.R.C.M., and Mr. Tanner, will take part in string quintettes and trios.
The programme consists of much little know- music of high interest ranging from Purcell to Rimsky Korsakov, and the details will be published in a later issue. The prices have been fixed at 3/-, 2/-, and 1/-. Booking will open tomorrow at Fail’s (Hastings) and Hurston’s (Napier).
