AMATEUR ATHLETICS

THE “H.B. HERALD” SHIELD GISBORNE DEFEATS NAPIER. SOME SPLENDID CONTESTS. The “Hawke’s Bay Herald” Shield, which has twice been won by tho Napier Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club in competition with the Gisborne Amateur Athletic and Harriers’ Club, changed hands on Saturday, when the Napier club in a very sporting spirit took the shield with them. The members of the two clubs met for the second of their two annual competitions for this season.

The Napier club was accorded a hearty welcome from the Gisborne people, whose hospitality is proverbial. The Gisborne club put in a very strong team and won the shield by a fair margin. The standard of performance by the members of both clubs was very high, and the Gisborne competitors arc entitled to the fullest credit for their splendid win. The margin of points in their favour was 25, Gisborne scoring 81 points and Napier 56 points. There was some rain early in the morning, but this cleared and the sports were got off in fine weather before a good attendance of the public, who muri have been more than satisfied With the outstanding quality of the sport provided. The officials carried out their various duties in a thoroughly satisfactory manner.

The fine spirit existing between the two embs is shown by the fact that many of the Gisborne competitors came as far as Wairoa with the Napier team on the return journey. Messrs F. Whitley and A.
