BRADMAN UNCANNY ANOTHER CENTURY WOODFULL’S DASHING DISPLAY. Adelaide, Jan. 31. In muggy and threatening weather before 12,000 spectators South Africa, in the first innings of the fourth test against Australia, scored 308, the innings of oscillating fortunes lasting 346 minutes. Grimmett routed McMillan seductively and Quinn skied one straight to Ponsford. Vincent had no timidity for Grimmett. He drove fearlessly, batting for 126 minutes. He hit four fours and gave a sound display. Ponsford was scratchy and had a lucky escape from being run out before he had scored. He succumbed to Quinn, who bowled him fast off the pads. The crowd increased to 25,000, the Bradman —Woodfull combination being the magnet. They gave a wonderful exhibition. Bradman’s placements being extraordinary. His accurate scoring was almost uncanny —twos, threes, fours in sequence. The crowd was thrilled by the rapidity of the scoring. Woodfull was also dashing The pair commanded the attack. Bradman was missed by Morke] at third man at 92. Woodfull went out as a result of a similar shot four balls later. He batted for 140 minutes and hit six fours. He and Bradman had put on 176. Kippax was unluckily run out. McCabe gave a simple catch in the slips. When Bradman’s score stood at 109 his aggregate against the South Africans had reached 1000, au unprecedented performance bv an Australian against a visiting team. HOLDERS SUSTAIN CHALLENGE. WIN BY TEN WICKETS. Hamilton, Jan. 30. South Auckland sustained the Hawke Cup cricket challenge by Nelson at Sodden Park to-day by a margin of ten wickets. The visitors made a poor showing in the first innings, being all out for 121 and being forced to follow on with a 200 runs deficiency.
