SOVIET RUSSIA

ON VERGE OF STARVATION. DESPERATE EFFORT TO STAMP OUT RELIGION. Auckland, January 26. Mr Robert Laidlaw, who returned today after a world tour embracing 33 countries, said that none of thorn can approach Russia for utter poverty. Il sympathisers with Communism were to visit Russia they would return within three months as rabid capitalists. He said that the country was on the verge of starvation. The roads and transport services were in a shocking state. Cleanliness was avoided like a plague. A desperate effort was being made to stamp out religion. It was obvious that the five-year plan was not going to accomplish what had been promised, but it was simply wonderful how the people swallowed the propaganda, which was to be seen everywhere.
