NEW ZEALAND
ITS BEAUTY AND CULTURE. AMERICAN VISITORS CHARMED Complimentary references to New Zealand people and institutions were made by Mr. C T. Conover, of Seattle, Washington, who with Mrs Conover, sailed for Honolulu from Auckland bv the Sierra on Saturday, after a brief visit to the Dominion. Mr. Conover, who is in business in Seattle, said he and his wife were charmed with New Zealand. “Coming from Australia,’’ said Mt. Conover, “we came across a number of astounding New Zealand periodicals, literary and otherwise. 1 say ‘astounding’ because to me they were in view of the fact that they issued from so new a country with so limited a population. They clearly indicated a people of culture and refinement. “New Zealand has many beauties npd marvels and should. I think, seek to turn the great tide of tourist traffic this way. It would be a large source of revenue and prove of great value iu promoting understanding between the peonies. “We believe that the fate of the world rests largely upon the co-opera-tion of the English-speaking peoples. Mrs Conovei .s one of the leaders of the English-speaking Union in the Pacific north-west, and this interest partly influenced our decision to visit NeW Zealand During our journey from Manila to Sydney we had many experiences of an exasperating nature, being constantly told of the faults or America. “Overseas opinions, often violent, are apparently- based on. among other things, press despatches which, outside the New Zealand newspapers, mainly feature crime and catastrophe and entirely ignore the great stream of American life and endeavour. Nothing in the world is more important than that we sons of Britain, under whatever flag we live, must drop all insular prejudices and sincerely try to know and understand each other and cooperate toward peace and security for civilisation.’’
