LOSS TO LABOUR MOVEMENT. (United Press Association—By CableCopyright.) (Received 25, 10.10 a.m.) London, Jan. 23. The death is announced of Dr. Marion Phillips, M.P., at the age of 50. The death of Dr. Marion Phillips is a blow to the British Labour Party, to which she has given long and prominent service. Born in Melbourne tho late Dr. Phillips completed her education at the University of London. For a year she was a member of the London School of Economics, and in 1912 she entered the Labour movement. For a time she organised the women’s Trade Union League, after which she became secretary of the Women’s Labour League. From 1929 she was Senior M.P. for Sunderland. She was unmarried. TRIBUTES TO GREAT WORK. (Received 25, 1.30 p.m.) . London, Jan. 24. Mr. Arthur Henderson pays tribute to Dr. Philips’ striking intellectual force, powerful personality and great industry. He says the women’s section of the Labour Party is a monument to her organising ability. Mr. L. Lansbury said: “Dr. Phillips came to us from Australia, bringing now vigour into the women’s movement.” Tho “Daily Herald,” in an editorial headed “Marion,” describes her as one of the gayest and most gallant fighters in the Labour movement. Her tireless energy and splendid courage were infectious.
