“WIZARD” SMITH CONFIDENT MAY MAKE ATTEMPT TO-DAY. BEACH SURFACE GREATLY IMPROVED. By Telegraph—Press Assn,—Copyright, Ninety-Mile Beach, Jan. 23. The prospects of “Wizard” Smith’s making his record-breaking attempt today are good, although he will be unable to make a definite decision until the afternoon, as the tide is high in the forenoon and he cannot inspect the beach until alter lunch. Mr. Mostyn also stated that he hoped to get the attack on the flying mile over by Wednesday and that it is possible that Smith will not worry about the ten-mile records if the beach is right for the big event this week. There has been a big improvement in the surface lately, and last night a heavy wind brought the spring tide well up the beach, which should be in good order when Smith inspects it. Yesterday Smith announced his in tention of making a trial run and flagmen from Kaitaia arrived. He was presented, however, by poor visibility. At dead low tide it was impossible to see clearly for more than 100 yards owing to a heavy mist which was hanging close to the ground. HOPEFUL OF CHANCES. Smith, however, had the Enterprise wheeled out of the garage and the engine finally tested. Smith was more than satisfied with the performance and stated that all was now ready to take the car out whenever the beach is right. No more work is to be done to the racer, and after yesterday’s test the driver is more confident than ever that he will accomplish what he has set out to do
