MAORI DROWNED

CARRIED AWAY BY CURRENT. WIFE’S UNSUCCESSFUL ATTEMPT AT RESCUE. By Telegraph—Press Association Auckland, Dec. 29. Thomas Ngaha, aged 27, married, was drowned in the Waikato river, at Rangiriri, on Sunday afternoon. With two other young Maoris, John Tumai and Percy Dickson, he started to race across the river, which is about 7| chains wide at this point, with a very strong current. Tumai turned back, and the other two got into difficulties. Dickson called for help, but Ngaha was unable to help him owing to his own extremity. Dickson eventually got ashore, but Ngaha was carried away and was seen to sink. His wife unsuccessfully attempted to rescue him in a canoe.
