RE-LAYING OF NAPIER SEWERS
A HEAVY COST. WORK NEARING COMPLETION The sum of £34.750 has been spent in Napier so far in the opening up and relaying of 20 miles of sewers which wore damaged mainly in Napier South aud Port Ahmiri by the earthquake. It is now over ten months since the earthquake and from within a fow weeks of February 3 contractors and day labour have been engaged lifting up the drains in the damaged areas and relaying them, work going on in about halfradozen places at the same time. Now, however, the end of the undertaking is in sight and during the last few months there has been a noticeable decrease in the amount done. In October five miles of sewers were relaid, while last mouth the total was only three and one-third miles. With the end iu sight of sewerage restoration, the borough engineers are now giving attention to the storm water drainage system, upon which not a great deal of work has yet been done, as there were more important and urgent matters to be dealt with. Private dwellings are being connected to the new sewers as quickly as possible and tests carried out. Last month 372 tests were made making a total of 1539. Good progress has been made with the restoration of the service at Port Ahuriri and by the week-end it is expected that the new pumping station off Stafford street will be functioning, thus allowing the residents between the Iron Pot and Ragland street to uso their services properly.
