In Possession of Liquor: At Santa Monica, after a short trial, Leavitt was found not guilty of a liquor charge. —The police arrested Cornelius Leavitt, brother-in-law of President Hoover, for alleged illegal possession of liquor. Leavitt and a companion, who was also arrested, pleaded not guilty. Salvage of Gold. A British syndicate is shortly attempting to salvage gold estimated at £600,000 which is aboard the Orient, one of the French ships sunk at Aboukir Bay by Nelson’s fleet in 1789. Negro Lynched. A negro named Williams killed Daniel Elliott, a prominent business man at Salisbury, Maryland, on Friday morning, and was himself wounded and taken to hospital, from which he was taken by citizens and lynched in the centre of the town in the presence of 2000 cheering spectators. Speed Flier Killed. Lowell R. Bayles, of Springfield, Massachusetts, a speed flier, was killed on Saturday when his plane struck the ground and burst into flames while making an attempt on the world’s land ’plane record. A few days ago Bayles attained 281.9 miles per hour.
