INTER-CLUB COMPETITION NAPIER DEFEATS GISBORNE. NAPIER CLUB DEFEATS GISBORNE The cjntest for the “Hawke’s Bay Herald” Shield between the Napier Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club and the Gisborne Amateur Athletic and Harriers’ Club took place on MoLean Park on Saturday afternoon, the home club, the holders of the trophy, being successful in withstanding the challouge by 82 points to 52 points. The day was almost perfect for the meeting and in addition there was a good attendance of the public, large holds in all the events and good performances. In all 26 runners and cyclists made tho trip from Gisborne, aud although they were not successful iu taking the shield away with them, they performed very creditably, their principal weak ness being in the field events where Napier scored heavily. The outstanding performance of the day was undoubtedly that of T. Campbell, tho Gisborne cyclist, who annexed every cycling event on tho programme. Ho performed the hat trick by winning the halfmile, one mile and two milo cycle championship, but not content with this he finished r> the dav by winning the Hawke’s Bay Wheel Race of two miles for the MeClurr Cup. This was the third time in which he has won this race, and he therefore holds tho cup permanently. He rode splendidly throughout the day, and thoroughly deserved his succeed,. In addition to tho championship shield events there were a number ot handicap events on tho programme, all of these being contested by good fields. Of tb’- events tho mile run for boys wr. undoubtedly the most popular, providing not only humour, but in some cases tho opportunity for young runners to show their ability. Tho winner, de spite the handicap he laboured under for the whole of the distance, ran well, and from the start was a strong favour, ite with the crowd. The club’s loud speaker was again functioning and with Mr J. Eagle at tho microphone tho public were able to be well informed not only of tho results of the races, but of their progress. Al) tho club’s officials fulfilled their various duties with enthusiasm and efficiency and the long programme of events was got off without a hitch and with the utmost expedition. Tho meeting was in every way a success and the club is to bo congratulated upon its effort. At the conclusion of tho events R. Callinan, tho. captain of the. Napier team, was presented with tho “Hawke’s Bay Herald” Shield, cheers also being given fo: the visiting team for their unsuccessful, but nevertheless plucky endeavour to secure the trophy.
