THE ELECTIONS
NO CHANGE IN POSITION AWAITING OFFICIAL RECOUNTS. CABINET MEETING NEXT MONTH. Wellington, Deo. 4. No vital change has taken place in the political situation since yesterday and it is unlikely that the outlook will be altered in any material way until next week, when the official count will take place. The absentee votes, of which there are a very large number, totalling over 1000 in some electorates, will then be counted and the fate of a number of candidates who have only small majorities will be decided. It is expected the members of Cabinet will assemble in Wellington next week. The Governor-General presided at an Executive Council meeting thi* morning. The Prime Minister, the Minister of Finance, and the Minister of Defence were present. The Hon. W. Downie Stewart arrived in Wellington from the south this morning, but it is expected he will leave within a week or so for Honolulu, where he is to meet a representative of the Canadian Government to discuss tariff questions. His absence from the Dominion will involve the temporary transference of his portfolios. The Minister of Public Works, the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates, has notified the Prime Minister that he will be in Wellington on Monday next. Consideration is not likely to be given to the question of Cabinet reconstruction until the final results are to hand. The Prime Minister left Wellington for his home at Cheviot this evening. He will return to Wellington early next week to meet other members of Cabinet.
