COMMUNISTS’ TRIAL
AIM OF THE SOVIET ESTABLISHMENT IN CANADA. COLLISION WITH POLICE ANTICIPATED. (United Press Association—By CableCopyright.) (Received 10. 1.25 p.m.) Toronto, Nov. 9. Testifying to-day, Tom Ewen, one of the nine Communists on trial charged with being and acting as members of an unlawful association and with being parties to a seditious conspiracy, told the Court that the Communist party ultimately aimed at establishing a Soviet Government in Canada. Every member of the party was taught to be loyal to the Soviet. He said that in the event of war between Canada and Russia the members of the party were taught loyalty to the Soviet no matter who was the aggressor. The party believed in the dictatorship of the proletariat. Referring to the demonstrations Ewen declared that organised workers’ defence corps were being formed. Collision with the police was anticiptaed and the defence corps were ordered to defend the speakers. “You deny the right of the police to interfere?” queried Mr Justice Wright. “Yes, either that of the police or anyone else,” replied witness.
