EARLY MORNING FIRE
OUTBREAK IN HASTINGS. RESIDENCE COMPLETE!./ GUTTED. A four-roomed residence in Haeta ings was completely gutted by fire early th.s morning. At 2.45 a.m. the Hastings Fire Brigade was called out to an outbreak of fire in the residence of Mr. L, Pearce, Lawrence street. The flames had spread throughout the house by the time the brigade arrived, and there was little hope of saving the building. However, the untiring efforts of the brigadesmen succeeded in saving the outside walls, though the contents of the house were totally destroyed. Last evening Mr. Pearce, who was alone in the house, as his wife is away on holiday, had a fire in the sittingroom, in tho front of the house. When he ictired he thought everything was as it should be. Wakened by what he thought was an earthquake he found his bedroom full of smoke. He communicated with a neighbour, who gave the alarm. The house was insured for £750 In the Norwich Union, and the furniture for £lOO, in the State Fire office. The brigade have to thank Meedames McLean, and Neats for providing light refreshments.
