ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES

FIVE INJURED WHEN CAR SOMERSAULTS. TWO IN SERIOUS CONDITION. Dannevirke, December 28. Two women, critically injured, and a man and two children less seriously injured, are lying in Dannevirke Public Hospital as the result of a motor accident which occurred near Noisewood, about three miles from Dannevirke, to-day. The injured are:— MISS CALLAGHAN, aged 21, daughter of Mr J. W. Callaghan, of Napier.—Serious injuries to spine. MRS WERNER, wife of Mr Allan B. Werner, of 3 McFarlane street, Wellington —Serious head injuries. ALLAN B. WERNER, Harbour Hoard employee.—Serious shock and bruises.—Condtion satisfactory. DOREEN WERNER, aged 15—Lacerated wounds to legs and shock. Condition satisfactory. ALLAN WERNER, aged 9.—lnjuries to fingers and shock. Condition satisfactory. It is stated by an eye-witness, Mr W. Stone, a racehorse owner- of Invercargill, who was motoring to Waipukurau, that Mr Werner’s car, which was going from Napier to Wellington, skidded on some loose metal near Norsewood, and somersaulted three times It was a marvel, he said, that all the occupants were not killed instantaneously. Dr. Boyd, of Norsewood, was called, and after he had rendered first aid, the injured persons were admitted to the Dannevirke Hospital.

Two Christchurch boys were injured in shooting accidents yesterday. Frank Hodges, aged 16, who was on a shooting expedition at Greendale, sat down to unload his gun, which went off accidentally. The bullet entered his left foot. G. T. Blackburn, also 16 years of age. who was out shooting at Governor’s Bay, was sitting on the grass when another boy’s gun hit a. rock and fired, the shot entering Blackburn’s right hip. Both have been admitted to Christchurch Hospital, but their injuries uro not serious.

Renzy Barry, who was injured in a motor-cycle collision at Matamata on Friday, died last night. Rodger Beattie, aged 28, a medical attendant at the Auckland Mental Hospital, was drowned while bathing in Lake Taupo yesterday. The fatality occurred at a point two miles out on the Tokaanu road. Barry Penney, of 90 Nile street, East Nelson, riding pillion on a motor cycle driven by Pat Gibbons, of Nelson, sustained extensive injuries in a collision with a waggon loaded with drums of benzine. The drums swung off the waggon and bombarded the unfortunate cyclist. His injuries included a cut over the left eye,. a damaged right, knee and extensive brufses and abrasions. Gibbons escaped with a few bruises and shock.
