In recognition of his encouragement of Union products a delegation of male and female South African students invested Mr. J. H. Thomas at the Dominions Office with the “Order of the Egg,” consisting of a string of South African hens’ eggs, which festooned his neck. It was intended to employ ostrich eggs, but these hatched out on the voyage. A girl student handed over a basket of peaches for Mrs Thomas. Mr. Thomas tecalled how, like all politicians, he previously had been the recipient of eggs in more unpleasant circumstances.
