AMBITION

We whom the pent-up city street Shute in from fragrant field and plain Will throb to all things brave and sweet, Till blossoming in our midst again The rose of sturdier manhood thrives: Onr lilies shall be in our lives. We who the straitened pavements tread, Nor feel the cleansing winds rush by. Who. looking upward overhead See but a cunful of the sky, Will quest for where the rainbow starts And harbour heaven in our hearts. We who amid the city’s roar The healing silence cannot win. Will make our minds an open door Into a quietude within. Where outer strifes and tumults cease And we may steep ourselves in peace. We whom the city claims its own Will day by dav still serve its need, Turning to flower and star its stone. Cherishing in our thought this creed: To keep the flame within us bright; To climb from height to nobler height. —lsabel Wyatt. ♦ ( ♦
