FLORAL DEMONSTRATION

BY MISS M. EBBETT AT WOMEN’S CLUB. A very delightful afternoon was' spent on Thursday at the Women’s Club, when Miss Marjory Ebbett showed members of the Garden Circle some of the secrets of her charming floral work.. As Miss Ebbett has been studying this wort in Wellington with Miss Murry, the members appreciated her kindness in giving a demonstration. First a posy of Parma violets was made up, to wear on a coat. Next a spray of pink roses with their leaves was wired into a pretty cluster for evening wear and then everyone watched with admiration while a basket of flowers for a dinner table, or for a gift, was carefully made. The flat gold basket was filled with posies of wallflowers tucked into moss, then wired stems of yellowygreen lachanalia were put to one side, with heads of fine mignonette, and a few dark-red polyanthus primroses were also put in, and dark bronze-green rose leaves were wired in as relief drooping over slightly from the sides. Two huge brown and red pansies wore wired on to the handle and also a bow of red velvet ribbon which toned in colour exactly. Lastly some delicate fronds of the finest maidenhair fern were put in, and the whole basket finely sprayed with water. It was fascinating to watch the process, and the result was sweet, and brought forth many exclamations of admiration from the members as it was handed round for all to see. Miss Ebbett answered many questions about making bouquets, sheaves, and posies, and when asked about wiring flowers said that each kind of .flower was treated differently. Miss Ebbett had spent a whole fortnight in learning to wire pansies. Mrs Bockett, leader of the circle, had decorated the room very charmingly with bowls of pink prunus, and vellow and creamy daffodils. For each Garden Circle meeting, Mrs Bockett, who is a clever gardener, brings choice flowers which are always unusual and interesting to the amateur gardeners who are members. Mrs T. H. Lowry, president, thanked Miss Ebbett and congratulated her on her clever work. Others present were: Mrs G. Davies, Miss H. Ford, Mrs Christie, Mrs C. Spinney. Miss Yvonne Gibson (Wellington). Mrs Mills, Mrs Aitken, Mrs Harvey, Mrs Watson. Mrs Roach, Miss Roach. Mrs Webber, Misses Baird (2), Mrs Waterworth, Mrs Fendall. Mrs F. von Dadelszen, Mrs Rainbow, Mrs Marshall, and others.
