HASTINGS FIRE BOARD

QUARTERLY MEETING. SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT. The quarterly meeting of the Hastings Fire Board was held yesterday afternoon, the Mayor (Mr G. F. Roach) presiding Others present were —Messrs J. B. Pickering (secretary), R. Henderson (superintendent), T. Donovan, W. Hay and C. MitfordTaylor. The superintendent’s (Mr R. Henderson) quarterly report was adopted as follows:— “There have been ten calls during the quarter including two outside the borough. Gordon’s fire was a considerable distance away from the nearest fire plug, consequently we had to lay out 1700 feet of hose in one lead, which considerably delayed the water reaching the fire, and a greatly reduced pressure. At the fire outside the borough at Mr Kemp’s wo were instrumental, with our first aid equipment, in saving a shed and outbuildings which were insured for £450. Five hundred feet of hose has come to hand during the month and it has been coupled up ready for use. All the plant is in good working order.” Complimentary words were spoken by the Mayor in connection with the appointment of Mr R. Henderson as superintendent, and Mr Henderson suitably replied. Members signified their intention of attending the social to bo held at the band-room, to ox Superintendent Keith, on June 18. Inspector T. T. Hugo’s report read as follows: — “At the inspection muster held at Hastings on March 20, the full strength of the Brigade, two officers, twenty-one firemen and one messenger were on parade. The required inspection drills were carried out efficiently, and the station and equipment were in good order and condition.” “This must be considered as meat satisfactory” commented the chairman. Accounts amounting to £62 16s lid were then passed for payment. It was decided to forward a letter to Mr W. Keith in recognition of his 40 years’ valuable service at Hastings. A vote of condolence was passed to the relatives of the late Mr J. R. Riddell, superintendent of the Napier Fire Brigade.
