MR. W. H. TAFT.

A former President of the United States. Mr, W. H. Taft, died today.

President Hoover, in a proclamation. has declared thirty days’ na tional mourning and a funeral with naval and military honours for Mi Taft.

Born in Cincinnati, U.S.A., in 1872. the late Judge Taft had a most distinguished career. He was a lawyer, a judge, a law-professor, a delegate to the Vatican, end was formerly Civil-Governor of the Philippines. When sent to Cuba to protect American interests, he assumed the position of Governor. He was Secretary for War from 19041908. and in 1907 visited the Philipine Islands and Japan. In 1908 he was elected President of the United States, as Mr. Roosevelt's nominee, and bent Mr Bryan by an immense majority. The late .fudge Taft Favoured the Reciprocal Treaty with Canada, and a rednotio" ■ f the tariff Ho was an enthusiast f " arbitration between nations. Tn 1911 ho signed the Ando - American Arbitration Treaty. His presidential term ended in 191.3. and in 19?1 ho was appointed Chi°F Justice of tho Supreme Court of the United States. He visited England in 1922.
