LARGE MAORI ASSEMBLY
THE GISBORNE HUI.
SIR APIRANA NGATA’S ADDRESS.
(Per Press Association.) Gisborne, Mar. 8.
Visitors are still arriving at the Waiematatini hui, which has become the largest assembly of educated young Maoris yet held, the Hon, G. W. Forbes journeying there to-day. Sir Apirana Ngata, addressing the assembly, reviewed the operations of his Department under the Native Land Adjustment Act. Last year, under the Act, he was empowered to spend 625,000 in developing idle native lands. The Act over-rode the hitherto tedius formalities of the Native Land Court, and empowered the Minister to deal direct with the owners, and place natives on land, paying wages, supplying hull, implements, etc. The Minister expressed the opinion that the day would eome when Maori workers would excel pakehas for the reason that their life was more, simple, and Maoris loved country life, whilst pakehas tended to drift to the cities. The Minister urged the Maoris to show industry before expecting help. He referred to the Waikato tribe, which is now working well a 16,000 acres block.
