BIDI-BIDI IN WOOL
GRANT FOR RESEARCH. At a meeting of the New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board some time ago, the valuable work then being carried out by Dr. Tilyard, of the Cawthrou Institute, in connection with the eradication of blackberry, came under notice, and the board raised the question as to whether Dr. Tilyard iiad gone into the eradication of bidi-bidi along the same lilies as he was working in the matter of the blackberry (Ost. In some parts of the Dominion bidi-bidi is a very serious menace to wool-growers, and it has been estimated that the depreciation in the value of wool in New Zealand caused by bidi-bidi amounts to round about £500,000 on the annual clip. After going fully into the question, the board approved certain grants for research work in the control of bidi-bidi, but this was not gone on with at the time owing to Dr. Tilyard leaving New Zealand to take up a position under the Australian Government. The problem was recently revived by the proposal that Dr. D. Miller, entomolo.nst to the Cawthron Institute, should, after attending the Entomological Conference in London this year, visit various research stations to make inquiries regarding measures lor the control of bidi-bidi and other noxious weeds which are serinuslv handic’nnina farmers in the various n n rts of fl’e Dominion, and the Mr. I r- n-1 •o”' r>"dn a grant of i’> ••• «r.»e - 'ii with these investigations.
