PAST AND PRESENT

PUPILS OF HASTINGS HIGH

RECORD SUCCESS OF "OLD PUPILS' DAY.”

EX-STUDENTB PREVAIL IN SPORT.

Yesterday was “Old Pupils' Day” at the Hastings High School, and despite the uninviting weather there was a record attendance of exstudents. This was the third annual function of its character, and undoubtedly it was the most successful and enjoyable yet held. The afternoon was devoted to a series of sporting activities by the past pupils in competition with the present scholars. Added interest was taken in the proceedings in view of the Armstrong Cup being competed for. This trophy goes to the faction gaining the highest aggregate of points. For the third time in succession the old pupils were successful in annexing the honours, but the school put up a gallant fight. The points were made up as follows:— Past. Present. Cricket 3 — Tennis 2| 1 Athletics 5 5J Totals 10J 6J The results of the various sporting activities conducted during the afternoon were as follow:—

THE CRICKET MATCH.

School had first bat in the cricket match, and the opening pair, Apsey and Irwin, made a promising start. Nearly half a century was on the board before a separation was effected. This was the signal for a collapse, and in quick time four wickets fell. Dyer managed to hold his end up and saw the innings through to the century mark. Old Boys had no difficulty in making the required quota of 102. The opening pair gave a start of 25, then Fippard collared the bowling to score rapidly. The second wicket fell at 55 and when Fippard retired he had contributed 81 out of the 109 runs recorded. Hia contributed included three sixes and seven boundaries. Shortly afterwards stumps were drawn with Old Boys collecting three points for the Aggregate Cup by 25 runs and five wickets. Details:—
