N.Z. LADIES’ CHAMPIONSHIPS HAWKE’S BAY SCORES A WIN. A VERY EVEN GAME. Gisborne, September 3. The fifth day of the New Zealand ladies’ hockey championship to-day was marred by bad weather. The games started in sunshine, but torrentia rain fell within ten minutes of the conclusion of the first series of matches, those between Southland and Bush, Rotorua and Auckland A, and Canterbury and Eastern Southland. For the starting of the se cond series of games the rain cleared off, but fairly heavy showers fell at intervals. Despite this handicap, however, the games were continued without interruption. In section A the winners were Southland. Rotorua and Ruahine Section B winners were Canterbury, Wellington and Hawke’s Bay. Detailed results are as follow’ :— A SECTION. Southland 7 v. Bush I.—The game was one-sided. In the first spell half both sides appeared tired and play lacked sting. At half-time the score was 3 to 1 in favour of Southland. After the spell the match brightened, and for Southland Miss Hislop performed the meritorous feat of scoring four successive goals. The winners’ other three were scored byMiss M Clark, Mclntyre and Horner. For Bush, Miss Cavanagh scored.

Ruahine 4 v. South Canterbury 0. —Ruahine were too strong a combination for South Canterbury. It was a tame game. Misses Brabazon and Simmonds showed excellent defence, and South Canterbury seldom entered the circle. The Ruahine forwards also played a great game, with Miss McKinnon the pick of the five. Foi Ruahine, Missses McKinnon (three) and Miss Baker scored.

Rotorua 2 V. Auckland A I.—'Weak shooting in front" of the goal mouth cost Auckland the game against Rotorua. This was a willing if not exciting encounter. The Auckland forwards repeatedly entered the circle, but their shooting was weak. Rotorua did not play as well as usual. For Rotorua. Misses Garmonsway and Rodgers scored, while Miss Lowe netted for Auckland. B SECTION. Wellington 2 v. Wairarapa 1.Wellington put up rather a poor display against Wairarapa, but scraped through to victory by two goals to one. The Wairarapa team played well and looked like winning when half-time came with the scores one all, and taking into consideration that they had the advantage territorially. Wellington played better in the second spell, but the forward combination was not working right and poor shooting spoiled many chances. Miss D. Henderson scored for Wairarapa, and Misses T. McDowell and M. Waters for Wellington.

Canterbury 3 v. Eastern Southland 2. —Canterbury had their hardest tussle to date to-day, and the match was anybody’s right to the finish. A draw would have been a fairer indication of the merits of the teams. Over-eagerness probably robbed Easttern of victory, this leading to offside in the opponents’ circle. Canterbury’s goals were scored by Misses Parsons, Mi'llichamp and Schluter, and Eastern’s by Misses M. Nicol and Bond. For the winners the scorers and Miss A. Bruere were the most prominent, and for Eastern Misses V. and M. Nicol, Stea nt on, Graham and Bond.

Hawke’s Bay 7 v. Auckland B 1 This game was much more even than the score indicates, the losers doing a good share of the attacking, but lacking finish. For the Bay, Miss Cook scored four goals and Miss Mortenson three. Miss Carlaw scored for Auckland. Outstanding players for Hawke’s Bay were the scorers and Misses Hairenia and Gemmell, and for Auckland Misses J. Carfaw. B. Colman, A. Black, and B. and j. Dodd.
